Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition that affects and disrupts the nervous system, affecting how the brain and body communicate, that cannot be attributed to any structural disease. It can manifest itself in a number of ways, both physical and psychological, causing a variety of symptoms - some physical, some sensory, and some cognitive, including motor symptoms such as weakness, tremors, abnormal movements, as well as sensory symptoms such as tingling or numbness. Some may experience non-epileptic seizures (see Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures, or PNES).

These symptoms are not imaginary. They are real, tangible, and can greatly affect one’s quality of life, often to a degree comparable with other severe neurological conditions. Unfortunately, FND has historically been overlooked by researchers and clinicians, occupying a mysterious grey area between psychiatry and neurology.

Although FND is considered a rare disease, its accurate prevalence remains unknown.  Its causes are still not fully comprehended despite its notable presence in neurological clinics.  According to some researchers, these neurological symptoms are frequently encountered indicating FNDs prevalence as a common disorder.  One report indicates approximately 1/3 of patients seen in outpatient neurology clinics report functional symptoms presenting indicative of FND. Unfortunately, despite this, there still remain conflicting views between the fields of neurology and psychology, leaving those afflicted confused, frustrated, and in despair.

Here at MindMend, our mission is to empower our clients with the knowledge and tools they need to understand and manage FND effectively by providing comprehensive information and resources.
